REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Right now, the wooded area in Rehoboth Beach on the corner of Dover Street and Kent Street, is covered in brown leaves and bare trees. But Rehoboth in Bloom is on a mission to cover the area in yellow and blue.
Cindy Lovett and Janet Point say projects like this are good for the mind, body, and soul.
"It really reminds us that that's why we are all here, is so we an be a part of the earth. A lot of people don't realize that being under these trees is so good for you. It builds your immune system and being out here and under the beautiful sunshine is what it's all about," said plant adviser, Janet Point.
Wednesday the group planted Virginia Bluebells and Trout Lilies, both native plants.
"Bluebells are a really low, little, purple flower. The trout lilies are also a low, little, yellow flower that come up through the spring," said founder of Rehoboth in Bloom, Cindy Lovett.
The group purchased 200 bulbs. The process is called "naturalizing", which means once the bulb is in the ground, it will grow back every Spring and spread more flowers across the area.
Rehoboth in Bloom is getting ready to celebrate its third year. Lovett says they've already accomplished more than she hoped, and they have more plans for the future.
"We want to put a pollinator garden in Grove Park, and also at the far east end of the median on Rehoboth Avenue we will be doing a perennial garden," said Lovett.
Raking leaves, digging holes, and planting bulbs, volunteers say after a year of being stuck inside, it's a refreshing and safe way to stay busy.
"Some people really love to dig in the dirt. Some people are artists and like to design how the colors go together so there is a niche for everybody," said Point.
We can expect to start seeing the new flowers bloom early Spring of 2021.
