LEWES, Del. - Delaware's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) has announced the temporary closure of a section of Cape Henlopen State Park on Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Wednesday, Jan. 17 for a managed deer hunt.

During these dates, the park's main entrance will be closed, preventing access to bay and ocean beaches north of Herring Point. However, DNREC says the Gordons Pond area and lands on the west side of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal will remain open as usual.

DNREC says the purpose of the managed deer hunt is to control the deer herd within the park and mitigate environmental impacts on rare plant species and communities at Cape Henlopen State Park.

The hunt is a collaborative effort between DNREC's Division of Fish and Wildlife and Division of Parks and Recreation.
